Students may use different communication devices in the home
or community than they use in the classroom. It is very important that there is
continued progress in the student’s communication skills. Using augmentative
communication systems in the home in and the community will reinforce the
skills that have been learned in the classroom
These are tips for parents to promote the use of
augmentative communication in the home:
- Provide direct instruction on the use of the system.
- Identify vocabulary that is relevant to the home.
- Teacher family members to provide opportunities for communication and to wait.
- Provide simple data and evaluation sheets for home and community use.
- Give parents permission to expand the child's communication.
- Keep it simple!
